Planter Boxes |
As part of the plans for the
Home Zone, it was intended to have a significant feature at each of the
entry points to the Five Roads (6 gateways). Designs for raised planters
(flowerbeds) were produced which would incorporate circular mosaics
contructed by residents. The plans for the
proposed
planter boxes can be viewed here.
The planters were constucted out of brick, but, alas, they did not prove
very robust. Traffic accidents caused (deliberate?) damage to most of the
planters, as shown in the pictures below.

![]() The Hastings Road (East end) planter survived for a while, and was planted up by residents before succumbing to traffic |
![]() Damage to the Denmark Road planter was repaired by residents, and it was been planted up by volunteers, but even that one finally had to be replaced. |
Redesign of the planter boxes was undertaken and they were made smaller (further back fron the roadway) and rebuilt using solid timber baulks (apart from the Hasting Road planter protected at the West end by the traffic gate). Not as impressive and visible as we had initially hoped, but at least after a year, the new planters remained intact! Planting by residents has been undertaken and the mosaics were installed in time for the formal launch of the Home Zone in April 2004.
