So, What Happened? |
We found that the neighbourhood we live in became increasingly used for all day parking by non-residents and as a cut-through to avoid main junctions with the Uxbridge Road. This made it difficult for us to park near our homes and dangerous, particularly for our children. This is not to mention the noise and fume pollution caused by motorists who habitually used these roads as a quick cut-through to avoid traffic lights. In established in the area. To make this happen, we needed to create a community spirit and organisation.
After much discussion and consultation, the area was confirmed as a pilot Home Zone, and then over two years we have achieved a gradual improvement in the area, with the introduction of controlled parking, traffic calming measures, closure of the major "rat-run" route and better lighting (not to mention a public noticeboard). Our activities have developed a sense of community. The challenge now is to consolidate the measures taken so far with further on-going changes to establish a Home Zone as a real recognisable concept.
